Itsukushima Shrine in Miyajima, Hiroshima-ken. Japanese people have this strange tendency to want to rank and grade everything, and apparently the shrine is one of the 'Top 3 Best Sights' in Japan.

Obviously, they've never seen me naked.

A sleeping deer on Miyajima in Hiroshima-ken, Japan. I took my brother and sister-in-law on a road trip around Japan when they came to visit me last week. It was also a chance for my girlfriend and I to see some sights here before we move back to New Zealand later this month.

I shipped off my graphics tablet back home already. I forgot how maddening it is to edit with a mouse. Especially the Apple Mighty Mouse. Man, is that thing a piece of shit.

Another turtle shot from the underwater set at Pandan Island in the Philippines. Turtles have incredible patterns all across their shells and skin. The head in particular looks like those mosaics you make with smashed up pieces of pots and floor tiles.

My friend Adam took this shot. I've only done the cropping and post-processing.

A sea turtle we found cruising around on the ocean floor (about 3m below) while snorkeling. My friend Adam actually took this photo - I don't own a waterproof camera. All composition credit goes to him.

Sea turtles are pretty laid back characters. As Adam succinctly put it, "They're the stoners of the aquatic world."

We saw another a few days later, digging his head into the coral bed at about 15m depth, but unfortunately we couldn't take any photos at that depth.

We were lucky enough to time our visit to Pandan Island with the annual release of baby sea turtles raised by the locals. The whole island (all 30 of us) went down to the beach in the morning to watch. A few plucky ones went dead straight into their new ocean home, but most dumb-assed around on the beach, trying to crawl back mainland. After 10-15 minutes of gentle coaxing and cheering on, all sixty somewhat baby turtles managed to make it into the water.

Godspeed little buddies!
