A decoy is a device that is employed as a distraction, usually for concealing what a group or an individual might be searching for. Decoys have notably been used in hunting but have also been used during wartime.
Duck decoys are a popular tool used by hunters to help them hunt wild birds. The hunter places a number of the life-sized decoys around the hunting area, encouraging birds to land in the area and hopefully within the range of the hunter's gun.
Decoys have also had their fair amount of use in the military. A common use for decoys was imitating military equipment (e.g. a tank). They were used to fool enemy forces into thinking your forces are stronger than they actually are or as a distraction for the main force.
